The Capitol Steps - The Lyin' Kings

The Capitol Steps

All Ages
America's premiere political-musical-satire troupe returns to the Crest Theatre. The troupe will offer its newest show, "The Lyin’ Kings."

"The Lyin’ Kings," which draws its humor from today’s headlines and twitter feeds, will include the latest songs about the Democratic primary candidates (“76 Unknowns”) and the newest late-night thoughts from President Trump (“Tweet It”). No one knows whom 2020 will bring to the forefront, but whether it’s Mayor Pete Buttigieg or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Capitol Steps will rhyme it. The show, in formation, may serve up such delicacies as Donald Trump singing a rock song, Bernie Sanders singing a show tune or Vladimir Putin dancing shirtless. You'll never know whether Nancy Pelosi, William Barr or Kim Jong-un might appear onstage together in a musical number. There may even be a few golden oldies from the Obama and Bush eras.

The Capitol Steps puts the "MOCK" in Democracy! Originally made up of congressional staffers, the past decade has seen the "Steps" harvest the talents of finely tuned musical theater professionals from around the country. They were nominated for the Drama Desk Awards of 2007 for "Outstanding Lyrics."

The Capitol Steps are constantly updating their material to reflect the biggest political news of the day. The group have elevated musical satire to an art form. Before The Daily Show, Full Frontal, and The Colbert Report, this Washington, DC-based comedy troupe gave audience laugh cramps with their bipartisan lampooning. If you’ve been keeping with the news, you know there’s no shortage of material. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the right or left side of the aisle, a snowflake or a deplorable: neither side is safe from this hilarious troupe.

The Capitol Steps shows, being headline-driven, are unpredictable, so the complete song list and cast list can't be forecast in advance. The troupe pounces on breaking news events in order to keep the show fresh.

"They're the best. There's no one like them, no one in their league." — Larry King, CNN "The Capitol Steps make it easier to leave public life." — Former President George H. W. Bush

The Capitol Steps began in 1981, when a group of Congressional staffers got together to provide entertainment for a holiday office party on Capitol Hill. Since then, the company of professional actors and singers have provided their unique mix of musical and political comedy and satire to audiences coast-to-coast. Each show consists of about 30 songs and skits, with “more costume changes than a Cher concert,” as an audience member once remarked. The Capitol Steps perform in Washington DC every weekend, tour nationally throughout the year, and have appeared on “The Today Show,” “ABC News Nightline,” “CBS Evening News” and on specials for NPR.

They've unleashed MORE THAN 35 Albums to-date, including 2019’s "The Lyin’ King."

Although the Capitol Steps are based in Washington, DC, most of their shows are out-of-town at 1000-1500 seat theatres from Seattle to Boston and every city in between. They have also performed for the last five Presidents, but not yet for President Trump.
