Mike Amaral's California Beach Boys
Mike Amaral became a musician in his youth and started a band called Flashback. Having spent a lot of time as a youth surfing and body surfing around Santa Cruz, Mike always wanted a Beach Boys tribute band. So, after an early retirement, he rounded up some other musicians, including a couple of cousins and formed Mike Amaral’s California Beach Boys tribute band in 2007. . “The one prerequisite I had is to find people who love Beach Boys music. Our goal was and still is to play for people who want to come listen to this great music”, says Amaral, but he knew the challenges of doing Beach Boys music, which is why there are very few (pure) Beach Boys bands out there. “We acknowledge the Beach Boys all the time. They’re simply isn’t any more fun music around and it’s such an honor to perform.”
Agent John Zurflueh of Starbright Entertainment met the band a few years later. “I first saw Mike and his band in concert at a winery in 2011 and was very impressed with the way they sang and performed the Beach Boys music, because it’s not easy. I grew up with the Beach Boys music, so I know it quite well. They use authentic equipment, original Beach Boys outfits, bring plenty of energy, excitement and surf videos to the stage. Not only is each player the best at what they do, they are good people, each of whom is dedicated to making each other the best. The band members each have an assignment after their weekly practice, so the following week they rehearse the song until it’s perfect…simply amazing dedication to getting the great music of the Beach Boys just right.”
This current lineup of members has played together for five years and includes music director Scott Slaughter who plays the keyboard and sings. Scott has worked on alongside original Beach Boys Al Jardine and Brian Wilson as well as Neil Young, David Crosby, Glen Campbell and Steve Miller, where they worked on some albums together. Other band members are singers and guitar players Richard Schmidt, Dennis Buldo (who also plays a mean saxophone) Josh Meschi, along with drummer James Nobriga and lead singer Mike Amaral.
Since their inception, the California Beach Boys have played all over the west and Canada. In 2016 their goal is to spread out over the rest of the country and bring this great music to the far reaches of the United States. In the meantime, please get your friends, family, co-workers of all ages and come out to this Live Beach Boys Experience at a really outstanding venue in the Crest. You will have a whole lot of Fun, Fun, Fun and get those Good Vibrations! This concert is part of a fundraising drive for KVIE 6 which first aired on December 3, 2015
